How to Get a Propane Tank Gauge Reading

It’s no secret that winters in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan can be extremely cold, so having plenty of propane to heat your home or business is essential. If you’re new to propane, it’s important that you understand how to read your propane tank gauge to accurately schedule your next propane delivery. Keep reading this blog to learn how to get a propane tank gauge reading from the experts at Kinsman Propane.

Steps to Check Your Propane Tank Gauge

Where Your Propane Tank Gauge Is Located

Your propane tank will be located outside your home or business, either above-ground or underground. Above-ground tanks are rounded, typically white or silver, and are placed on concrete or gravel pads near where the gas lines enter the building they serve. Underground tanks’ bodies are not visible, but their location is marked by a small, circular cap or dome sticking out of the ground.

Understanding Propane Tank Levels

Both above- and underground propane tanks will have gauges located under the small protective dome at the top of the tank. The gauge is a small, rounded dial that looks similar to a car’s fuel gauge.

Typically, the dial shows numbers ranging from 0 to 95 or 0 to 100. These numbers indicate the tank’s level in percentages, with the level indicator or needle pointing to the current tank level. If the needle points to 40, your tank is 40% full.

When To Order Propane

To help avoid a propane runout, you should request a propane delivery when your tank reads 30% full. This will give the Kinsman Propane team plenty of time to fit your delivery into our schedule. Please note that propane tanks are filled to 80-85% to allow for safe gas expansion inside the tank.

Eliminate This Chore by Enrolling in Automatic Delivery

It’s especially important to regularly check your propane levels when you’re using more fuel during the winter months, but enrolling in automatic delivery can take this household to-do off your plate.

Kinsman Propane uses degree-day calculations and tank monitors to monitor your fuel levels and create a propane refill schedule for you. Instead of having to contact us to place fuel orders, our experts will deliver propane to your home on your behalf, and only when your property needs it.
