What to Do If You Run Out of Propane in OH and MI

Running out of propane is one of those moments that can sneak up on you. One minute you’re going about your day, and the next your hot water’s lukewarm and your furnace is suspiciously quiet. If you’re a homeowner in Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan, here’s what to do, what not to do, and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Top Steps to Take If You Run Out of Propane

Step 1: Don’t Panic, but Also Don’t Delay Action

When your tank runs dry, here’s what to do right away:

  1. Turn off the gas supply valve on your propane tank by turning it to the right, or clockwise.
  2. Switch all propane appliances to the “off” position.
  3. Call us at Kinsman Propane to request an emergency delivery.

Step 2: Wait for Kinsman to Complete a Leak Check with Your Fill

By law, when a propane tank runs completely empty, a qualified technician must perform a pressure test, commonly called a leak check, before service is restored. This is for your safety. An empty tank can develop small leaks at fittings or connections that go unnoticed until the system is repressurized.

Step 3: Restart Your Propane System Safely

After the delivery and leak check, our technician will help relight pilot lights and restart your appliances correctly. We don’t recommend trying to do this yourself, since improperly relit appliances can cause safety hazards or simply not work the way they should.

If you ever smell that telltale rotten-egg odor of propane, leave the area immediately, avoid using anything that could spark, such as light switches, phones, appliances, and call us or 911 from a safe location.

How to Prevent Future Runouts

The best way to deal with a runout? Prevent it from happening in the first place. Here are a few easy ways to stay ahead:

  • Check your tank gauge regularly. We suggest checking it weekly during the colder months, and every few weeks during the summer. Place an order when your tank hits 30% full.
  • Sign up for automatic delivery. We’ll track your usage with the help of a tank monitor, and schedule deliveries before you get low.

A little planning goes a long way toward keeping your home running smoothly all year.
